The CAN Gateway supports CAN Layer 2, meeting CAN specifications 2.0A (11-bit identifier) and 2.0B (29-bit identifier). Function blocks enable the gateway to read and write higher protocol telegrams (e.g. CANopen).

The gateway adjusts itself to baud rates between 10 kbit/s and 1 Mbit/s using automatic bit rate detection (Auto Baud Rate). A fixed transmission rate can also be set. Six adjustable filters for input telegrams enable filtering of CAN messages via CAN identifiers.

Three operating modes are available: Sniffer mode provides detailed CAN bus analysis without interaction. In transparent mode, the gateway operates as an active CAN device that can send and receive any type of CAN telegram. Paired mode allows CAN telegrams to be created directly from the process image. It allows specific process values to be copied from received telegrams to the input process image. The CAN telegram can be sent cyclically, manually or event triggered (change of process value).
